Master-001: Acorn BBC Master 128
This is a fully refurbished Acorn BBC Master, purchased from Mark Haysman at RetroClinic as a ‘reference’ machine.
It came with several modern upgrades:
- MultiOS ROM, containing different versions of the Machine Operating System (MOS) [PDF manual]
- Internal RetroClinic DataCentre board (discontinued) [PDF manual]
- Internal Second Processor(s), emulated by PiTubeDirect running on a Raspberry Pi Zero
- External 3.5” floppy disk drive plus Gotek floppy drive emulator running FlashFloppy
To the left of the mainboard, you can see the new CMOS battery with diode and resistor protection circuit. The battery should last several years. Note the rotary switch that is mounted to the rear panel. It connects to the MultiOS ROM, discussed below.
The DataCentre board is mounted to the top cover; it connects to the 1MHz bus. The additional board hanging off the main DataCentre board provides an IDE interface using an SD flash memory card.
The Second Processor board is connected to the Internal TUBE interface. The Raspberry Pi Zero runs PiTubeDirect to emulate various Second Processors.
The MultiOS ROM, on the right, allows you to run different versions of the MOS: 3.50 and 3.20 for Master, 2.00 for B+ and 1.20 for the original BBC-B. Depending on the version of MOS selected, various other ROMs are also available.
The floppy drive unit has a built-in power supply. The Gotek drive has an OLED screen and a rotary encoder for disk image selection.
